364 people committed suicide in 8 months, 194 of them School going student

Apart from mentally preparing them to adapt and making them take care of their mental health, one of the goals of Anchal Foundation is to reduce the suicide rate of students in the country to zero. In addition to various other activities, it also conducts surveys on the youth and collects data on suicides to assess the overall state of mental health of the youth. Based on that source, all types of suicide data have been collected from 150 national and local newspapers and online portals of the country. According to the survey data, the number of suicides in the first eight months of 2022 can cause us concern. An average of 45 students committed suicide every month this year. Farzana Akhter Labani of Anchal Foundation presented the various significant results of the eight-month ongoing data coordination in a virtual press conference on September 9 (Friday) at 11 am.
According to the number of suicides collected from the newspaper, 364 people who studied in various educational institutions during their lifetime chose to commit suicide between January and August 2022. Among them there are students of different levels such as university, college, school, madrasa, nursing etc. Notably, out of 364 suicides, 194 were school going students. The second position was held by college students with a number of 76 people. On the other hand, the number of suicides among university students is 50. However, among the total suicide students, 44 students were also studying in Madrasas.
The survey revealed that 50 students have committed suicide in the last eight months. University students, out of which 60.00 percent are male students and 40.00 percent are female students. Among the college students 76 people choose this route among which 46.05 percent are male and 53.95 percent are female. Maximum i.e. 194 school going students have committed suicide in last eight months. Among them 32.99 percent are male and 67.01 percent are female students. Even students studying in madrasas have chosen the path of suicide which is 44 in number

The capital city Dhaka is at the top of all suicides. 25.27 percent students committed suicide in Dhaka in the last 8 months among those who committed suicide. 16:48 percent committed suicide in Chittagong Division and 14.01 percent in Khulna Division. On the other side of the country, Rangpur division has 8.78 percent student suicides. Besides, 9.62 percent students committed suicide in Barisal division, 7.42 percent in Mymensingh division and 14.01 percent in Rajshahi division. On the other hand, in Sylhet division, relatively less number of students commit suicide which is 4 percent.
Considering the level of education, 53.30 percent of school-going i.e. primary to secondary students committed suicide. College level students are at the second position in terms of suicide which is 20.88 percent. There are 13.74 percent of university students who commit suicide. 12.09 percent of the suicide victims are Madrasah students. Suicide rates among teenagers are on the rise going is an ominous sign for us.
