Minhaj Hossain, Special Correspondent,
"Our only demand is a division named Cumilla"—this slogan is resonating throughout Cumilla city and its surrounding upazilas. Common people, various social organizations, and professionals have come together, demanding administrative convenience, accelerated development, and the preservation of historical heritage.
Over the past few days, protests, human chains, and discussion meetings have been held in areas including Cumilla Town Hall, Kandirpar, and Kotwali Square. Speakers stated that Cumilla is a historically rich district. The region holds a distinct identity in terms of education, culture, and history. Therefore, if a new division is formed, its name must be 'Cumilla Division.'
Locals say that currently, they have to travel to Chattogram for administrative work and various services, which is difficult both in terms of time and money. If the Cumilla Division is formed, government services and development activities will reach the common people much faster.
A businessman who participated in the human chain said, "Cumilla is one of the oldest and most traditional districts in the country. It has universities, a medical college, industrial areas, and historical sites. So why shouldn't the division be named after Cumilla?" Meanwhile, the younger generation is leading an online movement using the hashtag #CumillaDivisionChai on social media.
A senior administrative official said that the matter of forming a new division is under active consideration by the government, but no final decision has been made yet. He informed that a potential administrative structure proposal including Cumilla, Brahmanbaria, Chandpur, and Feni is currently under discussion.
Local political leaders stated that if the Cumilla Division is established, it will not only be an administrative move but also a recognition of its historical status. They expressed hope that the government would take quick action in accordance with the public's expectations.
The people of Cumilla from all walks of life are now speaking with one voice: "We want development, but with our own identity. We want Cumilla Division."
