Human Chain in Bhanga Demanding Reinstatement of Two Unions, Call to Not Harass Innocent People
Md. Sakhawat Hossain, Faridpur District Correspondent:
In Bhanga, Faridpur, locals held a peaceful human chain and protest march for the fourth consecutive day, protesting the decision to separate two large unions—Algi and Hamirdi—from the Faridpur-4 constituency and merge them into the neighboring Faridpur-2 constituency (Nagarkanda, Saltha). The protesters also called on the administration not to harass innocent people by filing cases against them.
On Wednesday (September 24), from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., people from all walks of life in Bhanga, including residents of the two unions, held a human chain and protest march under the banner of the "Akhanda Bhanga Raksha Committee" (United Bhanga Protection Committee) on the road in front of the Bhanga Government K.M. University College.
Speakers at the human chain said, "We are continuing our peaceful human chain in a respectful manner towards the administration. Our movement will continue, Insha'Allah, until our two unions are re-merged with the Faridpur-4 constituency." The speakers also stated that their protest would remain peaceful and demanded the unconditional release of the two main coordinators of their movement, M. M. Siddique Mia, the chairman of Algi Union, and Palash Mia, who were arrested. The speakers added, "This decision is part of a conspiracy to diminish Bhanga, and we cannot and will not accept it. We want a united Bhanga."
It is worth noting that on September 4, the Election Commission issued a gazette separating the two large and proper unions of Algi and Hamirdi from Faridpur-4 constituency and merging them with the Faridpur-2 constituency. Since then, the residents of the two unions and people from all walks of life in Bhanga have become agitated. The protesters said they will continue to hold peaceful human chains until their logical demands are met.
