Crops and fruit trees of the land are damaged due to toxic washing of brick kilns

Md. Mashiur Rahman Khan, Joypurhat

Two-and-a-half hundred bighas of crops, seasonal fruits and orchards of poultry farms have been damaged due to toxic fumes from brick kilns in Joypurhat. The dream of hundreds of farmers in Puranapail and Sonapur areas of Panchbibi upazila of Sadar upazila of the district has now turned into a nightmare.

Gaziul Haque, a farmer from Puranapail area of Sadar upazila, said, “One bigha of my paddy and one bigha of banana are being destroyed by the poisonous washing of Belayet Hossain lemon brick kiln. We spent a lot of money and planted crops in the hope of making a couple of bucks. What will happen to us now? We want justice for the owner of this tidal wave and we are demanding compensation.

Saidur Rahman of Puranapail area of Sadar upazila said in a tearful voice, “4 bighas of paddy of my land has been damaged by the poisonous gas of this Belayet Hossain lemon brick field. The farmer said, "I have planted paddy with land lease. Now I do not understand how I can cover this cost." We are demanding justice from the government for the owner of this tide.

Belal Hossain, a farmer and farmer's representative in Puranapail area of Sadar upazila, said, "Paddy of my two and a half bighas of land is being wasted due to toxic washing of this low tide." He said, "I am demanding full compensation for the loss of crops of our farmers including me." He said that 8-9 ebbs are allowed within one kilometer of Puranapail. The farmer's representative also demanded that it be damaged.

Selim Mia, a farmer from Sonapur area of Panchbibi upazila, said, "I have cultivated paddy with 6 bighas of land from others with advance payment of Tk 6,000 per bigha." Profit is far from being worried about the money spent now. Who will be responsible for the loss of many farmers in the area like me due to brick kiln gas? I demand a fair trial from the government and local administration.

In this regard, Messrs. Bailey Bricks (BBC) Brickwater Authority Abu Ya Hia and RBM Brickwater Proprietor Belayet Hossain Lebu denied the allegations and said that it is not true that all the paddy of the land has been damaged due to their brickyard. However, some of the paddy lands have been damaged and they will leave as we will see later.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension agriculturist. Shafiqul Islam said the Upazila Agriculture Officer has been directed to take legal action in this regard after talking to the Upazila Executive Officer.
