One person was killed when a shore collapsed while extracting sand from a pond in Manda upazila of Naogaon district.
The accident took place at Paikpara village in Kanshopara union of the upazila on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Zaidul Islam, 35. He is the son of Omar Ali Mridha of Baksabari village in Nurullabad union of the upazila. He was contracted to fill a lowland by extracting sand from the pond.
According to the locals, Belal Hossain of Paikpara village was filling sand in the low land by dredging sand from Mojibar Rahman's Warishan pond. Zaidul Islam, the owner of the dredger, signed a contract with Belal Hossain for the work for Tk 6,000.
Belal Hossain's wife Maryam Bibi said that she has been working for about 20 days by lowering the dredger in the pond as per the agreement. The dredger was turned on again on Saturday after being closed for two days. In the afternoon, while standing in front of the dredger in the pond, the bank suddenly collapsed over a large area. Zaidul Islam died when the ground collapsed.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Manda Police Station Shahinur Rahman said the accident took place due to negligence. The body of the deceased Zaidul Islam will be handed over to his family.
