Statement by President and General Secretary of Awami League, Maldives Branch on the occasion of Prime Minister's Imprisonment Day

 Md. Al Amin Maldives representative

Today is Bangabandhu's daughter and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina's imprisonment day.

He was arrested on 16 July 2007 in various cases of lying, harassment and conspiracy.

Law and order forces surrounded Sheikh Hasina's residence Sudha Sadan. Sheikh Hasina was offering Fajr prayers at that time. At 7:30 in the morning, members of the law and order forces arrested him from Sudha Sadan in a case of harassment. They produced Sheikh Hasina in CMM court in Dhaka.

The Metropolitan Magistrate rejected the bail application of the Awami League president in an illegal way, two hours before the scheduled time of the start of court proceedings in the blueprint of the then caretaker government.

Then Sheikh Hasina stood at the court gate and protested against the nefarious political conspiracy of the then caretaker government through a fiery speech of about 36 minutes.

Moments before the arrest, Sheikh Hasina through a letter addressed to the countrymen urged the people and Awami League leaders and activists to stand against injustice without losing morale to protect democracy. The countrymen responded to that call. Then the then government was forced to release the Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on June 11, 2008 due to the continuous agitation of the Awami League and the people who wanted democracy and the stubborn demands of the countrymen.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's imprisonment day, senior leaders of Maldives branch Awami League have given separate messages.

In a message, President Alhaj Dulal Madbar said that for the development of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina's leadership is needed again and again and urged everyone to work unitedly in view of the upcoming elections. We would not have got a map and if her daughter Sheikh Hasina was not the Prime Minister, we would not have got the Padma Bridge, Joint General Secretary Noore Alam Rintu said that due to the bold role of the Prime Minister, the expatriates in the outside world have held their heads high. Praying for everyone's well-being, the party's vice-president businessman Monir Hossain said that Sheikh Hasina was not arrested on July 16, 2007, but that there was a plan to kill democracy. Organizing Secretary Anisur Rahman and Deputy Secretary Abul Kalam Azad were present.
