In Fatikchhari, two schoolgirls were killed when they were chased by the traffic police and hit by a paddy jeep.
The accident took place at around 12:30 pm on Wednesday (February 9) in the area adjacent to the CNDB ground at Fatikchhari on the Chittagong-Khagrachhari highway.
The deceased were identified as Mishu Akhter, 18, daughter of Abul Bashar and Nisha Moni, 18, daughter of Mohammad Lokman. They are both residents of Paindong Union and 10th class students of Paindong Haidachakia High School.
Angered by the incident, the locals blocked the Chittagong-Khagrachhari highway and set fire to the sergeant's motorcycle and moon car.
According to eyewitnesses, at around 12:30 pm, three traffic policemen from Chittagong city chased a moon car carrying rice near a rice mill near Paindong Pelagazi. The driver of the moon car chased and pushed the two schoolgirls while fleeing. Two students were killed on the spot.
After the incident, the agitated mob set fire to Chander's car and two motorcycles of the oncoming traffic police. They blocked the Chittagong-Khagrachhari highway with tree stumps. Two traffic policemen fled on motorcycles, but one escaped after being chased by a mob. Until the last news, Fatikchhari police are working to control the situation in the area, said OC Rabiul Islam.
