Press Conference and Memorandum Submission in Rome Over Humanitarian Crisis of Thousands of Bangladeshi Non-Seasonal Visa Holders
Minhaj Hossain, Special Correspondent:
Over 5,000 Bangladeshi expatriate workers who arrived in Italy legally are facing a severe crisis due to document-related complexities. These workers, who came to Italy on non-seasonal "Flussi" visas in 2022 and 2023, are now immersed in uncertainty and frustration because of a lack of necessary paperwork from their employers.
After waiting for two to three years without receiving their residence permits ("permesso di soggiorno"), these affected individuals organized a press conference at the Dhumpoketu Social Organization.
Due to the lack of legal documents, many of these workers and their families are unemployed and in financial distress. They are also unable to access medical services.
Nure Alam Siddiqui Bachchu, former president of the Bangladesh Association, said, "With the cooperation of the Bangladesh government and the embassy, there is a possibility that the documents of these legally arrived workers will be regularized."
The affected workers hope that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser to Bangladesh's interim government, will take the necessary steps to urgently resolve the document complexities for these remittance warriors who came through legal channels. In line with this, a delegation of the affected workers submitted a memorandum to Ambassador ATM Rokibul Haque at the embassy.
