In the battle of rivalry, one rebel and nine Awami League nominated candidates in Matiranga 6 and Guimara 3 Union Parishads of Khagrachhari Hill District have become boatmen. They wore the garland of victory, overcoming fear and anxiety. The laughter was of victory. In the second phase of the election held across the country on Thursday, the 10 UP elections in these two upazilas of Khagrachhari were very festive. There were also some isolated incidents in the election of the festival.
Awami League has nominated 5 unofficial candidates, 1 rebel and 1 independent candidate for the post of chairman in seven unions of Matiranga in Khagrachhari. Guimara, Hafchhari and Sindukchhari also snatched boats in eight of the 10 UPs, including three UPs, and independent and rebel candidates in the other two.
Among the 3 UPs of Guimara upazila of Khagrachhari, Nirmal Narayan Tripura has won 5208, Manshe Chowdhury 48 and Redak Marma 2453 with the boat symbol of Awami League nominated candidate in Guimara Sadar Union Parishad. Awami League nominated candidate Md. Peer Ahmed Majumder has been elected in Taindong union of Matiranga upazila by 5465 votes. In Amtali UP, Awami League's current chairman candidate Md. Abdul Gani was elected with 3111 votes for the boat symbol, in Gomti Awami League candidate Md. Tafazzal Hossain got 5061 votes, in Belchhari UP Md. Tofazzal Hossain got 5910 votes and in Matiranga UP Hemendra Tripura got 4012 votes.
Independent candidate Md. Abul Kashem Bhuiyan got 5031 votes and was elected unofficially in Tabalchhari UP. Awami League's rebel candidate Md. Elias has been elected in Baranal UP with 2301 votes. Returning officers privately declared their winners at the end of the election. Voting continues on Thursday (November 11, 21) at the polling stations throughout the day from 8 am to 4 pm. Separate clashes took place in Baranal and Tabalchhari Unions of Matiranga Upazila. There were chases between Awami League nominated candidates and supporters of independent candidates in Tabalchhari Union. Later, due to the foresight of the acting executive magistrate, the situation calmed down. After that, supporters of independent candidate Abul Kashem Bhuiyan were accused of beating Matiranga Upazila Awami League's former organizing secretary Md Ali Hossain twice. However, locals said that the administration's impartiality and activities were not due to any major violence.
Meanwhile, Khagrachhari Superintendent of Police Mohammad Abdul Aziz said that some irregularities in the peaceful vote could not lead to any kind of violence. The administration was active in polling in 10 UPs, including 3 in Guimaras and 6 in Matiranga. The law and order situation is normal and the police superintendent said that those who try to commit atrocities are not exempted.
