Md. Al-Amin, Debidwar, Cumilla (Special Correspondent :
"No more dead bodies; we are tired of carrying them." With this slogan, several organizations called for a road blockade and a human chain on the Cumilla-Companyganj highway, which is part of the Cumilla-Sylhet regional highway, to demand its four-lane expansion and urgent repairs. As part of this, the Debidwar Upazila branch of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami organized a human chain at the Debidwar New Market intersection.
The human chain was held this morning, Wednesday, on the Cumilla-Sylhet highway at the Debidwar New Market intersection, presided over by Ferdous Ahmed, Amir of the Municipal Jamaat.
The chief guest at the human chain was Mr. Saiful Islam Shahid, the Secretary of Cumilla North District Jamaat and the Jamaat-nominated MP candidate for the Cumilla-4 (Debidwar) constituency. Other speakers included Qari Waliullah, Secretary of the Debidwar Municipal Jamaat, Maulana Sharif-ul Islam Sarkar, Assistant Secretary of the Upazila, and Maulana Ruhul Amin Sarkar, among other leaders.
The leaders stated that the Cumilla-Sylhet highway is a busy road used by thousands of vehicles, including heavy vehicles, every day. Recently, the road has become unusable. They called on the concerned authorities to ensure its upgrade to a four-lane highway. Otherwise, they threatened to launch a vigorous movement with students and the public. It is noteworthy that road blockades, human chains, and protests were also held at nine other locations on this highway, including Mainamati, Kangshannagar, and Zaforganj, starting at 9 a.m. today.
